Sorin 3T Lawsuit Attorneys
Our Sorin 3T lawsuit attorneys are investigating several claims alleging that the Sorin Stockert 3T cooling system used during surgeries might have a link to deadly infections in open heart surgery patients. They are calling upon any person who has gone through an open heart surgery in the recent past to come forward,as these patients might have contracted a devastating infection without their knowledge.
What is the Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System?
The Sorin Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler System is a medical apparatus intended to keep the body temperature constant for patients undergoing cardioplegic surgeries. In such operations, doctors have to completely stop the heart and blood flow. The Sorin Stockert Heater-Cooler System is a product manufactured and distributed by LinaNova PLC. It is designed to use three circuits so that it can maintain a steady temperature in surgical patients.
In 2015, the FDA issued a warning letter after an open-heart surgery patient was found to have been negligently exposed to the fatal Mycobacterium Chimaera bacteria.
After lab tests were carried out by this agency, it was determined that the Sorin Stockert 3T heater-cooler system actually harbored this bacterium. The conclusion was that this bacterium contaminated the device’s water tank while it was being manufactured in Germany.
Exposure to this bacterium has led to life-threatening infections in open-heart surgery patients who had this system used during their operations. The worst part about Chimaera Bacteria is that it can remain dormant for years without the victim showing any symptoms. There are potentially over half a million heart surgery patients who could be carrying this bacterium in their bodies without their knowledge.
Due to these findings, the manufacturers of the Sorin Stockert 3T heater-cooler system issued a recall of their device in 2015. Their reasoning was that it could harbor harmful organisms like Mycobacteria. The following month, the FDA forced a recall.
Mycobacterium Chimaera Infection Symptoms
Keep in mind that these symptoms can manifest months or even years following surgery. If you have undergone an open-heart surgery recently, there are specific symptoms that you should look out for:
- Pains (stomach, joint, and muscle)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weight loss
- Redness, heat, or pus at the surgical area
- Night Sweats
These infections can be deadly so you should to go to the hospital as soon as you notice any of them.
Sorin 3T Lawsuit
It is true that Sorin 3T manufacturers admitted that they found fault with their devices and claimed to have taken care of it back in 2014. However, the FDA has different views. This is because they continue to receive reports of patients who have been diagnosed with Mycobacterium even today. Interestingly, all these patients had undergone open-heart surgeries. As a matter of fact, in 2016 alone, the FDA got 25 reports of mycobacterium contamination in heater-cooler devices used in hospitals.
Plaintiffs in the Sorin lawsuits claim that the manufacturers of Sorin 3T neglected their duties of making the patient’s safety a priority when it came to their product. According to complaints, the company should have issued warnings regarding the potential risks of infection.
